Staying in shape, inspiring others the goal for 69-year-old Zumba instructor, Robinson
My name is DeMarco Robinson, I’m a retired, 69-year-old fitness enthusiast and instructor. I currently teach Zumba classes at Eastlake Fitness in Goshen.
I’m from Elkhart; my roots are here. I went to Elkhart Memorial High School and then I left in 1973 for college and the military. I came back and worked for Elkhart County Corrections for 17 years, and I went back to school and worked for the St. Joseph County Police Department. Just in terms of my lifestyle and my career, staying fit and staying ready, physically, was always something that was a part of my life.
Throughout all of my life and my many different stages—even when I went back to school to get my B.A. in Criminal Justice at Indiana University South Bend, and even now that I’m retired—I always maintained a strong commitment to my physical health and longevity through exercising and weight training.
I believe in it. I believe that weight lifting and resistance training are important as you get older; you have to do this to maintain the quality of your joints and ligaments over time.
Zumba: where music, dance, exercise meet
I first came across a Zumba class around 10 years ago at Eastlake Fitness and I pretty much just loved it right away. It was the music that really got to me first. I was a drummer for a long time, and the Latino-based music and the dancing and timing of it all—that combination of music and exercise—really hit a sweet spot for me, and I started to take it very seriously as a way to stay in great shape.
I got my Zumba certification in Indianapolis in 2015 and I’ve been teaching it ever since.
Fun is the driving factor
I’ve worked with a lot of people over the years, and the key to an exercise regimen is for each individual to be smart about taking on that challenge and finding their own limits. Each person has the ability to inspire and motivate themselves, but it definitely helps when things are fun, and that’s really what Zumba is all about.
The driving factor behind my Zumba classes is for everyone to have fun. For me, Zumba helps me keep in shape, keep my cardio, and it supports my overall training. But it’s also just fun, I love everything about it—from the movements to picking the playlist for the classes.
For the people who come to my Zumba classes it’s equally fun, and—even more important—it’s great for burning calories, losing weight, and building muscle quality and enudrance. Anyone can come in and get a day pass to try one of my Zumba classes, and you don’t need any special training.
You just need to be able to move, and be ready to have some fun and you’re going to get a great workout. Anyone, any age, any fitness level can do this and be successful.
My philosophy is that fitness is forever, and that it’s for everyone. Anyone can accomplish their fitness goals with the right mindset and determination, and Zumba really helps people stay in that good, positive vibe of being active and having fun at the same time.
DeMarco Robsinon teaches Zumba at Eastlake Fitness in Goshen, 201 Chicago Ave., every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30. Day passes are available, and no previous experience or training is required to take part in Zumba classes.
