Sharon Hernandez • The Good of Goshen

Sharon Hernandez

Communications Coordinator, City of Goshen

I moved from Puebla, Mexico to Goshen with my family in 2007. I went to college at Ball State in 2008. In 2012, I moved back and became a reporter for the Elkhart Truth. Currently, I am the communications coordinator for the city of Goshen, but I like to dabble in all sorts of things.

I love working with media at City Hall because it’s all about informing the public, and it helps that it’s a short two block walk from my house! The environment where I work is wonderful and I work with great staff. The mayor here is so open-minded and works really hard to make the Goshen community a welcoming space. This same effort is reflected in his work environment, too. As an employee, I feel welcomed and feel that I am encouraged to communicate with others openly and honestly. We try to be as approachable and inclusive as we can.

Aside from City Hall, I have been learning about non-profit organizations through my work with Habitat for Humanity as their Vice President. Through Habitat, I am always learning just how generous and hands-on this community is. Habitat helps to restate Goshen’s overall vibe of neighbors being there for each other and showing up.

When I’m not working I take advantage of Goshen’s food scene. After moving closer to downtown last year, I ended up finding some favorite places. My go-to when I want some really good food is The Constant Spring. It has a great late night menu! But if I want something fast and also delicious, I go to Los Primos on Jefferson. It’s like Chipotle but better! Common Spirits is also becoming my go-to spot if I want to chat with someone. The ambiance is great for having a long conversation with a friend. Jami Hawkins, the owner, has worked really hard to make that business inclusive and to make that value known throughout the community. Her margaritas are the best I’ve ever had in my life.

At the end of the day, Goshen is like a friend that leaves an open door for you. You’re invited to everything and someone is always there for you. It’s what inspires me to stick around and do well in my job. I want to keep being part of Goshen’s welcoming atmosphere!
